Biodiversity Hiking Trail
The scenic Fish Eagle hiking trail at Van Loveren is currently being upgraded to a fully fledged biodiversity trail that will offer hikers a wealth of information on the animal and bird life as well as geology, they could encounter on the walk.
The 7.5km-long trail starts at the winery and crosses the Breede River, initially winding through the riparian vegetation. A short, steep climb up the Rooikrans leaves the river below and opens up breathtaking views of the Robertson valley's vineyards and the distant Langeberg mountain range.
From there, a gentle decent and a meander through the vineyards take the hiker back to the cellar. At a gentle pace the trail should take no more than 3.5 hours to complete.
The walk is sure to delight birders, amateur botanists and photographers alike. Hikers can expect to see small game, a huge selection of birdlife and a diverse range of flora, ranging from virgin Klein Karoo vegetation to Renosterveld. Panoramic views of the wine valley that are visible from most of the trail all but ensure breathtaking photographs.
