WINERY EXPERIENCES

BIRDING

Thanks to an abundance of birdlife, Van Loveren has earned a reputation as the best birding spot in the Robertson area. Birding clubs have sighted over 100 species in a single morning on the farm.

The birding walk winds through a variety of landscapes, including shady riparian vegetation and rocky cliffs. The diversity of habitats makes the variety of birdlife quite exceptional. In the summer months as many as 100 species can be recorded by the casual birder in a single day.

A breeding pair of fish eagles has nested by the Breede River since 1995. Since then, visitors to Van Loveren are treated to regular sightings of these magnificent raptors swooping down on fish in the river. Also look out for the elusive Tambourine Dove and listen for the Greater and Lesser Honeyguides and the Olive, Cardinal and Ground Woodpeckers. There are also Paradise Flycatchers and a variety of kingfishers and sunbirds to delight the alert eye.

GARDENS

Through the years, many trees have been planted in the Van Loveren garden to commemorate major historical and personal events. Today visitors can enjoy the shade and peace the tree rich garden offers. These trees are labelled, so visitors can enjoy their stories. A leaflet detailing all the stories is available from our staff and you’re welcome to do a self-guided tour or join a guided excursion.

HIKING TRAILS

The 7.5km-long Fish Eagle hiking trail starts at the Van Loveren winery and crosses the Breede River, initially winding through the riparian vegetation. A short, steep climb up the Rooikrans leaves the river below and opens up breath-taking views of the Robertson valley’s vineyards and the distant Langeberg mountain range.

From there, a gentle decent and a meander through the vineyards take the hiker back to the winery. At a gentle pace the trail should take no more than 3.5 hours to complete.

Hikers can look out for biodiversity information signage with a wealth of information on the animal and bird life, as well as geology, they could encounter on the walk.

The walk is sure to delight birders, amateur botanists and photographers alike. Hikers can expect to see small game, a huge selection of birdlife and a diverse range of flora, ranging from virgin Klein Karoo vegetation to Renosterveld. Panoramic views of the wine valley that are visible from most of the trail all but ensure breath-taking photographs.
